Very interesting. I lived in Siena for a year 20 years ago, and wondered about the wolves. I just assumed it was just because it was part of/near ancient Rome.
Highly recommend visiting Siena if you're in that part of the world - cut a day off of visiting Rome and take a train to Siena. The old town has fantastic vibes for just wandering around. Some streets you may begin to wonder if you've been transported 500 years back in time. There are tourists but it isn't crawling with them like florence or rome.
